Style Lessons from “The Mindy Project”

I pretty much idolize Mindy Kaling both as a real person and her character Mindy Lahiri on “The Mindy Project.” Both Mindys are style mavens and I think this Mindy quote sums up why:

“I feel the same way about clothes as I do about food – I want everything.”

Besides watching the show for its hilarious one-liners and anecdotes, you can also pick-up some great style tips.mindy

Go Bold or Go Home: Mindy’s wardrobe is as loud (and likely as large) as her personality. She takes fashion risks and I admire her daring choices. Sequins to the office, bright colored coats, or neon shoes – the answer is always YES.

Patterns Can Be Mixed-and-Matched: Mixing-and-matching patterns is an art that Mindy has mastered. She is often wearing multiple patterns, which you think would majorly clash, but somehow look wonderfully coordinated and chic.

Layering Is Your Friend: The key to layering is to add dimension without adding the appearance of bulk, which you can do this by layering lighter pieces. This goes hand-in-hand with how Mindy mix-and-matches patterns. Think a lightweight printed blouse under a bold patterned vest.

Sparkle Sparkle Sparkle: Mindy is rarely without some sparkle. Her accessory game showcases that you’re never fully dressed without some color-coordinated bling.

Every Occasion is Fashion Worthy: I loved when Mindy had “performance rhinestones” activewear for training at the gym. Dressing up or dressing down, Mindy’s fashion sense shines through.

Confidence Is In: This is perhaps the most important style lesson I’ve learned from Mindy. It truly doesn’t matter what you are wearing as long as you have the confidence to pull it off.

And if these style lessons don’t seem to work, just remember Mindy’s own words of wisdom:

“If I’m going to be a mess, I might as well be a hot mess.”
